A donation campaign "Save a life – become a bone marrow donor" was held in the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Republic of Tatarstan. Bone marrow donation is one of the types of care for patients with blood cancer and other serious diseases. In Russia, as in other countries, bone marrow donor registries are being created – databases of volunteers who are ready to donate their stem cells.
The most important issues were raised at the lecture:
• What is bone marrow?
• Why are bone marrow donors needed?
• What is the National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors?
• What information is stored in the register?
• How do I enter the donor register? Who can become a donor? Is it safe?
• How is the bone marrow transplant procedure going and who can your stem cells save?
The staff was told about bone marrow transplantation as one of the types of care for patients with blood cancer and other serious diseases, dispelled myths about the painfulness and danger of the procedure.
As a result, 12 people – both men and women - decided to join the ranks of potential donors and replenish the National Register of Bone Marrow Donors.
