Heroes of the Fatherland Day is celebrated in Russia on December 9. The commemorative date is dedicated to the establishment of the Order of St. George in 1769. On this day, Russians not only pay tribute to the memory of their ancestors who performed feats, but also honor the current heroes of our Motherland. Eight years ago, one of them became the deputy head of the fire extinguishing service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Tatarstan, Lieutenant Colonel of the Internal service Sergey Kostin.
On March 11, 2015, at a fire in the Admiral shopping center in Kazan, the GDZS unit, headed by Lieutenant Colonel of the internal service Sergei Kostin, managed to rescue five people from the wreckage. Lieutenant Colonel Kostin himself was the last to leave. During the evacuation, the building structures collapsed. His body was found under the rubble.
Three other fire department employees were seriously injured during the collapse.
By decree of the President of Russia dated November 5, 2015, Deputy Head of the Fire Extinguishing and Emergency Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Republic of Tatarstan, Lieutenant Colonel of the Internal Service Sergey Alekseevich Kostin was awarded the Order of Courage (posthumously) for courage, bravery and dedication shown in extreme conditions.
