In Kazan, work continues to prepare for the flood period

18 March 2021, Thursday

The republic is actively working to prepare for the accident-free passage of the spring flood. Today, the preparatory work for clearing the channels of small rivers in the suburbs of Kazan was carried out by the teams of the Gorvodzelenkhoz under the leadership of specialists of the Civil Protection Department of the Executive Committee of Kazan.
The height of the snow cover in Kazan is from 50 to 79 cm, which is 2 times more than in 2020. The ground was frozen to a depth of 70 cm, and ice with a thickness of 70 to 120 cm formed on the rivers. According to the forecast of weather forecasters, a shortage of precipitation is expected in March 2021. Although the spring started with frosts, a gradual increase in temperature is expected in the near future, and the average temperature in March-April will be 1-2 degrees higher than the long-term average. Given these conditions, a gradual snow cover is expected. The future situation will depend entirely on the temperature during the opening of small rivers. The preparation of the city for the flood is carried out as planned in accordance with the Plan of Flood Prevention Measures. To date, work has been carried out to clear the bridge areas of debris, branches for the unhindered removal of meltwater and ice on the bridges over the river Kinderka, Vertlevka, Knox and Sukhaya. Snow was removed from the area around all 34 pedestrian underpasses to prevent them from being flooded by meltwater and groundwater. The water intake trays were cleaned of dirt and debris.
Also, since March 1, a survey of households in areas prone to flood events is being conducted. Employees of the search and rescue service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Tatarstan walked through the residential private houses of the village of Salmachi, which are located near the bank of the Knox River.
