EMERCOM of Russia develops cooperation with the International Civil Defense Organization

1 March 2021, Monday

March 1 is the World Civil Defense Day. According to the decision of the International Civil Defense Organization (hereinafter referred to as IOGO), the theme of this year's celebration is Strong civil defense to preserve the national economy.

"This day once again shows the importance of joint work of civil defense structures for the world community," said Pavel Baryshev, Deputy Minister of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. "The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, as a strategic partner of the IOGO, is actively involved in humanitarian operations and expanding international cooperation on civil defense issues."

Since 1993, the Russian Federation has been the largest donor to IOGO, which allows the EMERCOM of Russia, as a strategic partner of the organization, to implement various international development assistance projects under its auspices, and to participate in major humanitarian operations.

In the past year alone, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations took part in more than 20 international actions in disaster zones on the territories of foreign states, and in more than 30 working meetings with foreign colleagues. All joint activities are aimed at forming common approaches to the organization and conduct of civil defense, improving the training of specialists of the rescue services of the IOGO member countries.

"Only by working together do we achieve the main results of our work-saved lives, preserved property, cultural values and economic objects around the world. I want to express my confidence that the further cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations with national services and international organizations will be equally effective and prompt," Baryshev said, addressing his colleagues with words of gratitude for their selfless and noble work.

On the eve of World Civil Defense Day, IOGO Secretary-General Mariatu Yap addressed colleagues around the world, noting that " over its long history, IOGO has evolved from an association called the Association of Geneva Zones, founded in 1931 by the French surgeon General Georges Saint-Paul to promote the creation of security zones for the benefit of vulnerable populations and historical monuments during war; to become an intergovernmental organization on March 1, 1972. This Organization, which is very close to the States, is engaged in the protection of the civilian population, property and the environment from natural or man-made disasters."

This year, MOGO will celebrate its 90th anniversary. It is the only intergovernmental organization that specializes in the field of civil defense and protection of the population at the international level. Currently, it consists of 59 countries.

As part of the celebration of the World Civil Defense Day, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia organized events throughout the country: information and educational classes, exhibitions of fire and rescue equipment, modern and rare equipment, equipment, tools, rescue equipment and civil defense property, scientific and practical conferences, Internet quizzes, quests and competitions for knowledge of actions in case of emergencies among children and youth, press tours to civil defense protective structures. All-Russian open lessons dedicated to the significant date are held in educational institutions.
